Ganesha Mantra for Inner Strength

I’ve been working with mantra for over twenty years. I first discovered the Hindu mantra chanting practice through the inspirational music of Deva Premal and Ram Dass. I then went on to live in community, where chanting became a part of my daily meditation and inner reflective process.

The power of mantra lies in its ability to shift our focus from the busyness of the mind, the distractions of the world, and all the constant inner turbulence to states of peace, ease and feelings of Oneness. Sacred sounds infused with meaning, their intentional repetition helps us activate and awaken states within that we may have forgotten or that may require strengthening.

I always say in my online courses and when I’m teaching Bhakti on Yoga Teacher Trainings, that mantras are like little friends that we carry around with us in our back pocket. Whenever we need a little support in a specific situation, we can choose the mantra that will help us activate the energy we need for that situation. Boosting our self-belief and inner capacity.

For example, during winter when the days are short and the energy turns inwards, I often reflect on challenging times and how I’ve learned to overcome them using mantra. One such time was when the Covid-19 pandemic has just broken out. I’d been travelling through Bali and Australia for 4 blissful months and had just returned to Germany at the beginning of March 2020, to begin a 35 concert/workshop tour.

Overnight, everything changed. Germany announced a full lockdown, cancelling all my live events, and I found myself staring at the living room wall, thinking, “What am I going to do now?”

At the time, I remember the feeling of complete anxiousness… My business landscape changed overnight, and I didn’t know how I was going to earn my living. Furthermore, I felt numb at first, then angry, and then I remembered…there’s a mantra for every difficult time in our lives, and I knew one that could help me during this time: The Ganesha Mantra.

An Ode to the Hindu elephant God, Ganesha, this mantra helps us awaken the qualities in ourselves of playfulness, joy, resourcefulness and the ability to overcome difficulties with ease. That was exactly what I needed during lockdown, and this is how I used the mantra.

Ganesha Mantra

Ganesha, the Hindu elephant God, is the remover of obstacles. He can help us find the way through or around a problem, with ease, joy and little playfulness 😉 And in spring 2020 this was exactly what I needed to regain my inner strength and resilience!

So I began a daily chanting practice with the Ganesha mantra: Om Gam Ganapataye Namaha

Om – the primordial sound / the origin sound.

Gam – a seed or Biji mantra for Ganesha. It strengthens the overall intensity of the mantra.

Ganapataye – another name for Ganesha

Namaha – means to offer reverence to someone or to bow before them

And overtime, I felt different. Where I once saw obstacles, I was starting to see solutions. Despite being in a different situation, I started to feel my joy and flow come back to me. This is what the mantra does. By chanting it, you align yourself with the energy of Ganesha, and strengthen these qualities within yourself until you become them.

Be the Light

You know, mantra chanting is like becoming a lighthouse. Firstly, you begin the chant by focusing on the words. Next, focusing on its meaning, vibration and how to pronounce it. After a number of repetitions, you won’t have to actively concentrate so much and instead you’ll likely feel that the words are chanting you!

I make an analogy here to a lighthouse. When you begin, you fill yourself up with the energy of the mantra. And then after a point it pours out of you into the world. Try it for yourself and see 😉
